The clutch is an important component of a motorcycle or ATV. It helps transfer the energy your engine produces into the wheels, propelling you forward when you twist the throttle. As with most parts, the clutch is subject to wear and eventually needs to be replaced to keep performance levels high. If you find yourself in this situation, you might be worried that the process is long or difficult.

You can also read the step-by-step instructions in the remainder of this post. What You Need to Begin Of course, you’re going to need a replacement clutch kit. We use the to demonstrate in this article, but there are many options available – both and. If you need it, don’t forget to get the as well. (This may or may not come included in the clutch kit. With Tusk, the clutch kit and spring set may be purchased separately or as a single kit.) Please note that there are two kinds of clutch plates: friction plates and metal separator plates (either steel or aluminum). Many clutch kits include both, but this is not always the case.
You’ll generally need both types of plates. Once you have the clutch kit ready to go, it helps if you gather together a few other important things that you’ll need during the process. Service Manual Engine Oil Gloves Bowl or Container for Engine Oil Screwdriver or Similar Lever Tool Tools to Remove the Clutch Cover (and Possibly the Brake Lever) Of all these items, not enough can be said about your specific machine’s service manual. No two machines are exactly alike, and your service manual is designed specifically for your vehicle.
Soak friction plates in oil. It’s ideal to soak the fiction plates in engine oil in advance of installation.
If possible, place them in the oil the day before and let them soak overnight. If you need to, apply the oil directly to the plates to ensure that it is evenly coated on both sides of each plate. Drain the oil. Because motorcycles and ATVs use “wet clutches,” all clutch components are immersed in engine oil during regular use. You need to drain this oil before replacing anything. Move the brake pedal (for motorcycles). The brake pedal will be in the way of the clutch cover on motorcycles.
Depending on your bike, you may need to completely remove it to get it out of the way. In some cases, you may be able to simply move the brake pedal. First spread the brake pads using a simple lever like a screwdriver. Next, push the brake pedal down. Wedge a screwdriver to hold the pedal down and out of the way. Remove the clutch cover. First, you need to actually remove the clutch cover.
On some machines, there is not an individual clutch cover. If this is the case on your vehicle, you’ll need to remove the entire side case in order to access the clutch. Once you take the clutch cover off, it’s a good idea to inspect the gaskets or O-rings (depending on which your vehicle uses). If they are worn, this is an excellent time to replace them. These are specific to the type of clutch you have. Unless you’ve replaced the clutch with an aftermarket unit, you’ll need to stick with OEM gaskets or O-rings. Remove the pressure plate.
The pressure plate is held on using several bolts. You need to loosen these. In order to prevent an uneven release of pressure, it is best to loosen the bolts in a crisscross pattern. For example, on a pressure plate with five bolts, loosen them in the same order that you might use when drawing a star-shaped pentagram. Directly underneath the bolts, you’ll find the clutch springs. Remove both the bolts and the springs, and set them aside. Take off the pressure plate.
On the inside of the pressure plate, you’ll be able to see the lifter. On some machines, there is a ball or needle bearing. Remove the friction and metal separator plates. Take the friction and metal plates out of the clutch.
Some vehicles have a judder spring or cushion ring. If you are installing an OEM clutch, you’ll need to reuse these. Pay close attention to how they are aligned! Most aftermarket clutches do not require them, however. (Those that do will specifically say so in the instructions.) For example, the Tusk clutch kit doesn’t need them.
You might want to take a moment to inspect the outer basket or the inner hub since the plates are removed. If you see any grooves, the clutch might feel “grabby.” If there is extensive wear, you might have to replace either the basket or the hub – or both. Install the new friction and metal separator plates. Typically, install a friction plate first. Always remember to refer to your service manual for your specific machine. Put a metal separator plate into the clutch. Alternate friction plates and metal plates until all of them have been installed.
Just as you began with a friction plate, you should end with a friction plate. Reinstall the pressure plate. Even though the lifter came out automatically with the pressure plate, you’ll likely need to reinstall it separately to ensure that it goes in correctly.
Once the lifter is in place, put the pressure plate back in. Prepare the springs. If your clutch kit came with new springs, use them. Otherwise, you can use your old springs. Each spring is paired with a bolt from the pressure plate.
Reinstall the bolts with the springs. You can finger tighten them to ensure that they don’t fall immediately back out. Tighten the bolts in a crisscross pattern – the same way that you loosened them. About 7-9 foot-pounds of torque are required when tightening the bolts, but you should always refer to your service manual to make sure that you are using the correct amount of torque for your machine.
Reinstall the clutch cover. Clean off the sealing surfaces to remove any dirt or debris that may have appeared during the clutch installation process. Put the clutch cover back on. Tighten the clutch cover bolts to keep it securely fastened in place. Approximately eight foot-pounds of torque are required, but you should check with your service manual to make sure that you’re using the correct amount of torque for your vehicle. Pump the brake back up.
Remove the screwdriver (or other lever tool). Pump the brake pedal up and down to get the brake pad back in place. Restore the engine oil. Now that the new clutch has been installed, you need to fill the engine back up with oil. Check the clutch lever’s free play. Don’t forget to check the clutch lever’s free play. There needs to be 3-4 millimeters of free play.
If there isn’t and the clutch cable is too tight, your clutch plates can wear out prematurely. Enjoy Your New Clutch! There are a number of things to do, but replacing a clutch is easy if you just take it one step at a time. Anybody can do it.

Designed for rigidity, durability and straight-line performance, the frame features large diameter tubing in key areas and a large front reinforcement plate. SHOWA 37mm inverted front forks are completely adjustable for rider weight, style and ability.
The forks feature a cartridge system with fully-adjustable rebound damping and 20-way adjustable compression damping (also included are guards to protect the inner fork tubes). The forks have 275mm (10.8-inches) of travel. A SHOWA large diameter rear shock absorber is valved to produce a plush feel and resistance to bottoming.
The shock provides 277mm (10.9-inches) of wheel travel and features adjustable compression and rebound damping force adjustment. A twin-piston caliper front brake with 220mm (8.7-inches) large-diameter disc and a rear brake with 200mm (7.9-inches) disc to provide excellent braking performance. The light, narrow-diameter front and rear brake hoses improve feel and feedback to the rider. The font hose is routed behind the fork leg, eliminating the need for a brake hose cover.
A rigid rear brake caliper provides reliable braking performance, long pad life and is easy to maintain. The caliper’s plastic guard reduces the possibility of damage and saves weight. The forged aluminum-alloy rear brake pedal is light and strong while providing the rider accurate braking feel. High-quality footpegs are made of cast chrome-molybdenum steel, instead of stamped steel, which makes them more durable with better grip. Each side of the new color seat has textured surface for better knee gripping.
