Ski Doo Olympique Manual
Hello Fellow Ski-doo addicts: I was wondering if anyone would have an online source with step by step instruction to properly replace the track on my Ski-doo Elan 250 with bogie suspension. I did have 70's Bombardier Shop manuals but you think I can find them. I also would like anyones opinion on the replacement track I should purchace and from what company. Kimpex, Camoplast and does Bombardier still make a 15 inch, 1.97 track?? All your imput would be very well appreciated. Thanks to all and Keep Ski-dooing.
Jack AKA Rotaxman440. Yes they do make replacement tracks still. I think they are 116' but easy to look up.
Remove all bogies/axles, and rear idler assembly. Remove driveshaft bearing cup on right side of engine compartment (may need to remove muffler first too). Remove chaincase cover and remove drive gear and chain from drive shaft. Slide (persuade) the drive shaft towards the bearing cup (right) side and remove the shaft from the tunnel thus freeing the track to come out. Reverse order for new track installation. Good time to look at your chaincase and see if the chain tensioner is still good and gears not worn badly.

A new chain is a no-brainer usually. That will be a little confusing to find as those type are only used for the old Skidoo 1.97' system (Elan, Olympique, Tundra, and others). They are basically a hefty bike chain.
I never succeeded in finding an online supplier for them. Maybe the Harley shop knows where to find them. If you need new gears, that will be even harder to find. OK I just checked the Kimpex catalog and it looks like they do have the chain and gears. Good Luck AK. The front axle seals have a 'lip' that fits into a recess in the housing on the housing side and also in the chaincase on the chaincase side.

If these seals are in good shape, and well in their recesses,it is nearly impossible to get the housing cup off the axle without removing the seal first. The same goes with removing the axle from the chaincase. Use an awl or a screwdriver to remove the seals first.
They will probably be destroyed but should be renewed anyway and are only around $2 each from Kimpex. Well worth putting new ones in than having a puddle of oil on the floor. Nice looking Elan! The latch & keeper for the console looks good and even the key switch rubber boot and dimmer & kill switch rubbers look perfect! Hello Old Sled Nut: Thanks for your imput. I will follow all your advice and get the seals from Kimpex. Thanks for the nice comments. My Little Elan is a great machine. Have a great day.
